Heart Disease Prevention at Hawaii State FCU

We all probably know a friend or family member who suffered from heart disease. But how many of us actually have an opportunity to increase awareness of the risks and do something about it?

I was honored to have been asked this year to join the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Hawaii Chapter, and co-chair the Heart Ball. As heart disease runs in my family, I’m looking forward to sharing with my network about their mission to improve the lives of Americans through research on heart disease.

At Hawaii State FCU, we’ve already been strong supporters of AHA where hundreds of our employees and their families have participated in the annual Heart Walk for the past couple years. Some employees have even stepped it up further. Our senior VP in mortgaging auctioned off his famous homemade rum cake and our compliance team organized a healthy salad bar lunch. To date our employees have personally raised about $10,000 for AHA, and I take heart in seeing our team get creative in their efforts to make a difference.

As February is Heart Awareness Month, it’s a great time to start with simple steps to prevent heart disease. Eat healthier foods, including fruits and vegetables; get some exercise every day; and lead a balanced life.

Heart disease is the #1 killer in Hawaii and nationwide. Our Aloha State is ranked as one of the healthiest places to live, yet heart disease here still claims about 2,500 lives each year. Let’s not add to that sobering stat.
